What do Silverfish Look Like?
Lepisma saccharinum, aka Silverfish gained their name from their fish-like appearance. Their small, thin legs, tiny scales and wiggling movements make them look like fish out of water. As their name suggests, they are silver in color and have small bristles along their abdomen with two long antennae at the head.
Where Do Silverfish Come From?
In their natural habitat, silverfish live in leaf and plant litter looking for food and water. They like dark, damp areas like under sinks or in sheds and garages. They can also end up in your bathtub or sinks in search of water.
How to Get Rid of Silverfish
There are a few things you can do to eliminate silverfish from your home and prevent them from returning.
- Fix leaky pipes are remove any standing water
- Clean any potential dark, humid hiding places
- Keep pantry food containers sealed and remove their food (oats, cereals, flour, sugar, old magazines and files) source
- Clear away any outdoor living areas like leaves, grass clippings and gutters
- Seal your home and fix any cracks or broken seals in windows
